One thing I am continually in awe of is God’s beauty and grace shown through nature. I came into this country and was instantly greeted by bright green trees, gorgeous tropical flowers, a bright warm sun, and clear blue water. We had about an hour drive from the airport to our base and all you could see outside your windows were jungle covered mountains and the most blue sky you could imagine. One thing that has always hit me is the simple fact that nature and it’s beauty is a gift that humankind does not deserve. Even as I sit writing this blog in a quaint surf and coffee shop looking out the window at absolutely beautiful mountains, trees, and rain, I am in awe of the fact that God gave me this view as a blessing and a gift. When He created the universe He could have created a flat world of black and white. Instead, because of His love for His children, He chose to get creative and create colors, landscapes, climates, and so many other things that add to the beauty and wonder of creation. Even as I walk through the busiest parts of Jaco that are filled with trash, abandoned buildings, and thousands of people all trying to get somewhere, I am still struck by God’s goodness shown through His creation. The way that He intricately created each individual to look the way they do, or how He gave people the abilities and determination to build beautiful buildings that being light to the streets. In our sun curse, we deserve nothing. But through God’s grace, mercy, and love I am able and called to bask in the beauty and magnificence of His creation.

Love you all,

Katherine

  1. I love this, Katherine! You are a beautiful writer, and I love your spirit of awe and gratitude so much!

I’m reading “Braiding Sweetgrass” right now (Robin Wall Kimmerer), and she talks a lot about viewing nature as a gift to be received gratefully and then tended to in order to give back respectfully. What you wrote here reminded me of that. Carry on!
